A mutual fund that shifts its holdings among different investments so as to attempt to reduce risk. In rare cases, as much as 100 percent of an asset allocation fund’s assets can be moved into a single type of security (usually one that is low-risk by nature, such as bonds). An asset allocation fund differs from a balanced fund in its greater freedom of maneuvering.
